Help the robot find lost Pokémon family members – and discover the magic of robotics!

During CodeWeek Berlin 2025, the Humboldt Forum transformed into a bustling hub for young explorers. In our workshop Pokémon Family Search with Robots, children and families discovered how robots perceive their environment, process sensor data, and execute logical commands. The activity blended technology, storytelling, and collaboration into an unforgettable learning experience.

Learning Through Play with Robotics and Colors

The Pokémon robotics station was one of the most popular highlights at the Humboldt Forum. Children aged 5 to 10 teamed up with Robowunderkind modular robots to explore how sensor-driven robotics works.

Each Pokémon family member was represented by a color: Red, Yellow, or Blue. The robot used its onboard color sensor to identify the correct target. When the right Pokémon was located, a green light flashed accompanied by a victory chime; if an incorrect color was scanned, a red alert sounded. This immediate feedback allowed children to understand conditional logic (If/Then statements) naturally and intuitively.

How the Pokémon Mission Worked

The modular Robowunderkind system made abstract programming tactile and interactive:

  • Color sensors detected targets in the physical room.
  • RGB LEDs and sound modules provided instant feedback.
  • Children guided the robot step by step to reunite all three family members.
  • Upon completion, the robot celebrated with a colorful light dance and victory fanfare!

Why Robotics Inspires Young Learners

The workshop demonstrated how technology and imagination unite. Children learned how autonomous machines process sensory input and make decisions—all without staring at a computer screen, but with movement, light, and sound.

Parents and educators were impressed by how effortlessly children grasp complex computational logic when given hands-on, playful challenges.
